If he were 10 or 20 years younger I bet he'd be getting the A-list international projects, or even Hollywood projects, that have eluded much of his career. Talk about an impressive body of work though! It's simply massive.

no you are correct- he's never going to win a competitive Oscar (I checked my crystal ball :-) Its strange but for a man who's been in the business for decades, he's never felt very A-list to me (at least in this country), and yet some or most of his scores are absolutely legendary... The Mission is just an absolutely beautiful score.

I like THE UNTOUCHABLES as well. Totally fun score and that main theme is great. Morricone should have won for THE MISSION, plain and simple. All the other years, there were stronger scores IMO. But that doesn't negate the fact that he has never won a competitive Oscar. Now that he has the honorary Oscar, I seriously doubt he'll ever win one for Original Score. They don't feel the need to award him now. But maybe I'm wrong...

Please do! There are a couple of source cues that you can probably skip, but the way Fenton meshes his orchestral writing with Gwangwa's choral writing is particularly effective. And if you can find a vinyl copy of GANDHI, I heartily recommend that too. Oddly enough, that's never been released on CD.

Ah vinyl...

I've been on a huge Fenton kick recently (mostly thanks to you, Jim!), and I picked up a vinyl copy of this score recently—I wasn't familiar with it or the film at all. I've only spun the album once, but your hardy recommendation is more than enough of an excuse to spend more time with it!
