I have never been interested in anything remotely ‘Sherlock Holmes’ until I saw the trailer for this film, however I didn’t get chance to see it and forgot about it.

I didn’t realise Zimmer was at the helm though, and this gypsy-like score really appeals to me so I simply must see/hear it now!

Thanks for posting the clips, it’s a nice taster for me of what’s to come!

Yes, those bag of tricks are there even for Jerry, John and pretty much anybody else that rises above the ordinary. Sometimes it can be a hindrance. But I like to think of it as their “voice”. I like some composers’ voices, others not so much. :)

Nice piece, Jim! Gave me a nice idea of what the score’s about. Interesting how even in the process of trying to be “outside the box” with different instruments and such, how there’s – in that first track at least – still a very stereotypical Zimmer synthy rumbling underneath it all that could easily have been lifted out of Dark Knight. Most composers, I guess, really have a signature style or bag of tricks that no amount of window dressing can disguise.

I like Zimmer. I dont think he’s the best but the man is extremely versatile. His score to the Lion King is simply a masterpiece and the music to Thelma & Louise never fails to pull a tear out of me. I agree that lately he is scoring music to films that don’t interest me but I am always pleasantly suprised when I hear his music.

I agree, Dave. I never expected to have fun while listening to it. And I wasn’t overly impressed with the clips. It wasn’t until the Oscar nomination that I finally bought the CD (for my ridiculously obsessive Oscar collection) and the score really grew on me, especially booming from the Bose speakers. LOL

This is a great review! Thanks Jim! I really enjoyed the score too. An unexpected but very fun approach to the subject matter and a great opportunity for Zimmer to let his hair down. Also pretty cool is the link on the enhanced CD to download the score in 5.1 surround sound!
