Hi Lani, thanks for the update! That's very exciting! Looking forward to seeing it. I feel a later winter trip to Minnesota is in order. :)

What a great article, thank you! I didn't know the opera had been written in Minneapolis. You may not have yet seen our announcement, but today we announced that Wuthering Heights has moved up in our production schedule and will now close our 2011 season (fortuitously in his centenary year!). The dates are April 16, 17, 19, 21 and 23, 2011. It will be directed by Eric Simonson (also an Academy Award winner). We will be posting casting updates soon on our website, www.mnopera.org.

Hi Dr. Johnston, thanks for commenting. Thanks for the providing the link to Ms. Beaton's obituary. I hadn't heard that she passed away.

I too hope that the Herrmann estate will allow some judicious cuts. I believe there is a concert version been performed in France this summer, but that won't help resolve any of the challenges of staging the work. Hopefully, the work will finally find a home, and a decent director, when the Minnesota Opera tackles it in 2014.

Congratulations on a marvellous article. I kmew some of this from MORAG BEATON directly who sometimes spoke about the whole experience. I have known the opera since its days as an LP and LOVE the music.

THe late John Cargher often broadcast exceprts from it on his program SINGERS OF RENOWN.

If the Herrmann Estate could be persuaded to make appropriate cuts I still believe it could work in the theatre - always provided it has a goondenough Director (of OPERA) to do the job.

Soprano MORAG BEATON, whose main career was in Australia and went on to become a great TURANDOT, died last Friday (APRIL 1) in Sydney. Her obitaury appears in THE AUSTRALIAN newspaper today (APRIL 9) and can be found on www.theaustralian.com

Thanks Charles. Glad you liked the article. Yeah, apparently Herrmann had his issues. Though he's certainly not the first or the last. LOL

Actually, the opera is very easy to digest. It's very tonal. It could use a few more peaks and valleys, since it's fairly lugubrious. But there are some marvelous moments in there. Had it ever gotten to a production point while he was alive, and had he allowed other people's input, it had the potential to be something truly marvelous. A better recording might help appreciation for it as well. But it's by no means difficult to listen to, simply because of the quality of much of the music. At least not to me.

I always heard Herrmann was difficult but still had no idea just how difficult he could be. I read that at times he even rankled Aaron Copland - a generally kind and patient man and mentor to him.

Herrmann was a great and unique talent and years ago I picked up his ( somewhat Mahler inspired) symphony and was quite impressed but the idea of a 3-1/2 hour opera of likely not easy to digest sounds of Herrmann is just not appealing.
Fabulous article Jim.
