"Best Years of Our Lives" is nothing short of a masterpiece - a magnum opus, if ever there was one. One may to listen to the the score [in the film], or on the wonderful recording, a thousand times without tiring of it. Much of the music is truly heartbreaking. Try 'on' the cues, "Homer Goes Upstairs" or the coda in "The Nightmare" for starters. If these do not move you then I am afraid nothing much else will.

Hi Douglas, thanks for commenting. Sorry it took me a little while to respond. I agree that the score is uplifting without being overly sugary. And that's something Friedhofer did so well, convey the emotion without being sappy and sentimental. This is my Top 10 as well. In fact, it ranks right below THE OMEN (how's THAT for a switch in tone?), and we all know how much I love that one. LOL

IT IS in my TOP TEN Best Scores. A tremendous score. Uplifting, without being overly sugary. Hugo Friedhofer deserved this Oscar. A beautiful and delicate score. One of the Finest.

You won't be sorry, Charles. Friedhofer is definitely worth exploring more. And you can't go wrong with this score. It's one of the all-time greats. Period. :)

I don't know a great deal about Friedhofer though I thought his BOY ON A DOLPHIN was pretty special but after playing this clip (for some reason I never did see BEST YEARS) I'm an instant fan.

Yes I can see the Copland influence but heck this isn't some inferior imitation but totally engaging and moving music. I'm putting this film on my Netflex list and looking up more of this fine and tragically all but forgotten composer.
