[...] From the opening bars the music is, like our hero, brash and bold. Then we ‘re off and running as the orchestra furiously gallops along with the out-of-control horses and carriage in the opening scene. The first thirty minutes of the film, which are continuously scored, are about as close to a symphonic tone poem as you will find in film music. Like it or not (and there are some who don’t), Korngold was one of a handful of composers whose grandiose music set the stage for the next decade in film music. And, as was stipulated in his contract, Korngold was able to recycle themes from from the film in his Violin Concerto. [...]

Thanks for your comments Kees. I definitely miss "discovering" composers/scores/pieces in record stores. There was something about hearing it on the speakers while you're just browsing, asking the surly underpaid worker what it was, and then purchasing it as an impulse buy. Those days are gone. Online, as great as it is, just isn't the same.

I haven't heard that Varese recording of KING'S ROW in years! I used to have it on LP but it long since bit the dust. I'll have to track down a copy of the CD somewhere. I won't part with FSM's original tracks, but that was a wonderful re-recording. Was it Gerhardt? I don't remember.

And thanks for your kind words. I'm looking forward to participating. And I agree Giacchino is not a breakout composer. But for me this was the year I finally sat up and took notice of him. I honestly couldn't think of any alternatives. Give me time, I'll catch up to the rest of you guys. :)

Good overview, Jim!
It must have been quite an experience to have discovered Korngold in a record store. His lyricisme is unequaled. Personally, I flote away on his King's Row (1941), the Varèse recording.
Welcome to our club of critics! The AC was impressed by your track record. We don't regard Giacchino as a breathrough composer anymore, though. Who did you have as alternatives?
