Hi Joel. Thanks for the links and information about your brother's exhibit. I wish I could have been in Germany to see it. I checked out both of yours sites as well. I have many of your brother's CD's on my shelf. And I wish I had one of your sculptures in my "garden" (air quotes are necessary on that word). :)

My younger brother, Michael Haas, retired senior producer for Decca Records and founder of the Entartete Musik Project recently mounted an exhibition and wrote a catalog on Eisler's work for the Jewish Museum of Vienna. Reference for (He also mounted an exhibition and wrote the catalog for the Erich Korngold exhibition there in 2008.)
Some of the information and catalogs may still be posted on line at
www.jmw.at (there is an English version of the site) or at my brother's site at

You're welcome, Jo. I'm glad you enjoyed the article. I've meant to read the book but just haven't gotten around to it. Given Eisler's background, I'm sure it would make for a fascinating read about film composing from that time period, especially compared with practices today, and probably with Hollywood practices of the time as well.

That will learn me for skipping the first paragraphs.

I think the book itself provides a strong foundation for composing creative work that performs a function. Unfortunately much film music composed doesn't hold well against the author's writings, which I think ought to be a standard for those who are not yet masters, or have other more pressing composition concerns like "serious" music.

Thanks for your article on Eisler.

Thanks for pointing this out. I do mention the book in the article, though I wasn't able to give it the attention it probably deserves. Perhaps that's for another post. :)

Eisler also wrote a book - Composing For The Films. Published in 1947 by Oxford University Press.
