UP In Arms!
News — By Jim Lochner on May 24, 2009 at 2:01 pmAccording to The Pixar Blog, Disney has confirmed that Michael Giacchino’s score to Pixar’s UP will be released by Walt Disney Records as a digital download only. As reported earlier, the soundtrack will become available for download on May 26. Sound clips can be heard on Amazon’s product page. I assume it will be available on iTunes as well. It remains to be seen what the bitrate will be.
Giacchino’s music–including THE INCREDIBLES and the Oscar-nominated RATATOUILLE–has served Pixar and Disney well. They repay that creativity by shirking him of a proper CD release.
I’m fully aware that “download only” may be the wave of the future for new releases. But for those of us who prefer the tactile sensation of a physical CD and the sound quality that only “lossless” can bring, that wave is resulting in a wipeout.
As a fan of Giacchino’s work, I’ll buy UP. But what a missed marketing opportunity and a waste of some beautiful artwork.
